Growing up, Gabe lived on both sides of the border and spent much of his time in his Grandfather’s TV repair shop in the Chaveña Neighborhood of Ciudad Juarez. He saw firsthand the important cross-border connections and relationships that support families and businesses in New Mexico. He knows that if we’re going to build a stronger economy in New Mexico’s 2nd district, we need people in Congress who will put partisan politics aside to deliver for New Mexican families.

For more than 10 years, Gabe has dedicated himself to public service.

In 2013, after helping build one of Las Cruces’ most successful startup companies, he joined Senator Heinrich’s staff and worked across southern New Mexico to solve problems for New Mexico businesses, communities, and families. He was also instrumental in the designation of the Organ Mountains Desert Peaks National Monument, protecting it from harmful development and safeguarding it for future generations.  In 2017, he was elected to the Las Cruces City Council with over 70 percent of the vote. In this role, Gabe delivered millions of dollars in investment to create and improve parks, updated the district’s infrastructure, promoted policy that created thousands of jobs, and helped craft a comprehensive development plan that focused on lifting families out of poverty. In prior years, Gabe has served as the executive director of the Las Cruces Hispano Chamber of Commerce, worked in public lands conservation, and as a policy advocate promoting child welfare and family wellbeing at the federal level.

But throughout his life, Gabe has also seen that the American Dream his family fought so hard for is slipping away from the grasp of most New Mexicans. An ever rising cost-of-living, lack of economic opportunities for southern New Mexico, a tax code that benefits CEOs and millionaires and punishes working families, lack of investment in rural and Native American communities, and politicians who put themselves and their Wall Street donors ahead of  the communities they are supposed to represent are robbing families of their potential.

But in this work, he’s also seen that the American dream his family fought so hard for is slipping away.

Gabe is running for Congress to be a champion for working families and to build an economy that benefits everyone. Gabe will do this by creating high-quality, good-paying jobs, helping New Mexico families deal with the rising cost of living, ensuring all New Mexicans have access to affordable and high-quality health care, combating climate change, and conserving public lands and natural resources to capitalize on the district’s growing outdoor recreation economy. Gabe believes that the work doesn’t stop until all New Mexicans have meaningful opportunities to raise happy, healthy families and pass on their traditions to future generations. Before joining Congress, Vasquez spent time working in Deming at a chile factory and understands first-hand that New Mexico is a vital part of America’s agricultural sector. Immigration & Border Solutions

Rep. Vasquez is a first-generation Mexican-American who has lived on both sides of the border. Vasquez is committed to creating bipartisan opportunities to fix our broken immigration system during one of the most trying political environments in our nation’s history. He is a proud co-sponsor of the American Dream and Promise Act to establish a pathway to citizenship for DREAMers. Vasquez also introduced a package of common-sense bills that addresses different parts of our immigration system and the challenges we face at the border. This legislative package is informed by the people of New Mexico, for the people of New Mexico.

His package of immigration and border solutions includes:

  • STRENGTHENING OUR WORKFORCE ACT: Our farm workers, energy workers, teachers, health care workers, and others— are the economic engine of our society. This bill provides immigrants who work in critical jobs a pathway to lawful permanent residency.
  • HUMANE ACCOUNTABILITY ACT: We must address the abuse and neglect that occurs within federally sanctioned detention centers. This bill provides oversight, accountability and data to ensure families and children, who are legally seeking asylum, are treated with dignity, humanity and respect.
  • STOP COYOTES ACT: Coyotes and cartels are taking advantage of women and children on their journey to the US. This bill would impose higher penalties for those who are convicted of human trafficking and those who engage minors in their illicit activities.
  • SMART BORDER PROTECTION ACT: The majority of illegal drugs that come into this country, particularly fentanyl, are confiscated at our ports of entry. Smart, non-intrusive inspection technology, such as the new MEP at Santa Teresa, is a game-changer. This technology detects drugs and speeds up wait times for commercial traffic and non-commercial vehicular traffic. This bill will tackle the nation’s fentanyl crisis by implementing this technology and increasing staff to effectively operate it.
  • FARM WORKFORCE SUPPORT ACT: The shortage of agricultural farm workers is also a deep concern for New Mexico. In places like Deming, Arrey, and Lemitar, Vasquez has heard directly from producers about the shortage of workers. He believes we can meet the demands of feeding our nation with sound immigration policy that also protects farm workers and their families. This bill paves the way to reform the existing agricultural workforce program.

Rep. Vasquez has been calling on Congress to address our broken immigration system and provide emergency federal funding to support border communities. In addition, Vasquez has been leading the effort to secure funding to stop fentanyl smuggling by installing new technology at our ports of entry.

Keeping Energy Costs Down

Rep. Vasquez stands by the energy workers who fuel America’s energy economy. He believes in an all-of-the-above approach with oil and gas and clean energy to diversify our economy and bring more jobs to New Mexico. More investments in American energy will decrease prices for families like yours and protect our economy with reliable energy sources.

  1. Prioritizing Energy Workers: New Mexico’s fossil fuel industry makes up about half of the state’s revenue and is largely located within Vasquez’s district. That’s why he introduced theEnergy Workers Health Improvement and Compensation Fund Act. The fund aims to better compensate oil field workers and their immediate relatives who experience health impacts related to their jobs, and ensure that those who are powering our economy have the health care they deserve.
  2. Supporting Domestic Energy: Vasquez introduced language on the House floor to prioritize domestic energy, and keep costs down by ensuring energy produced in America is used by Americans first.
  3. Lowering Utility Bills: He also championed affordable energy solutions for struggling New Mexicans by demanding transparency and long-term solutions from Symmetry Energy Solutions— making sure utility bills remain manageable.
  4. Clean Energy Jobs: Vasquez has championed major investments into New Mexico including companies like Maxeon which will bring thousands of jobs to the Albuquerque area to manufacture solar panels, and Arcosa which is bringing 250 new jobs to Belen to manufacture wind towers. He has also secured more than $63M in funding for projects such as electric truck charging stations as well as carbon capture and storage technology which will diversify energy sources, but also create jobs and make energy more affordable for families.
  5. Renewable Energy Transition: Rep. Vasquez strongly supports transmission projects like the Sun Zia and Southline Transmission Projects that will help bring clean energy to people’s homes.

Gabriel Vasquez (born August 3, 1984)[1] is an American politician who is the U.S. representative for New Mexico’s 2nd congressional district. He previously served as a member of the Las Cruces City Council.[2][3] Vasquez is a member of the Democratic Party.

Early life and education

Vasquez was born in El Paso, Texas, and raised in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico.[4][5] He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and journalism from New Mexico State University in 2008.[6]

Career

As a college student, Vasquez was the news editor and editor-in-chief of The Round Up, New Mexico State University’s student-run newspaper. From 2008 to 2011, he was the business editor of the Las Cruces Bulletin. In 2011, he was the executive director of the Las Cruces Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. From 2013 to 2015, he served as a field representative for Senator Martin Heinrich.[7]

Vasquez was the Democratic nominee for New Mexico’s 2nd congressional district in the 2022 election.[10][11] He won on November 8, 2022, by a margin of about 1,300 votes, defeating Republican incumbent Yvette Herrell. The district’s boundaries were redrawn after the 2020 census, drawing the previously Republican-leaning district to be Democratic-leaning.[12]

During the campaign, Vasquez deleted tweets attacking the oil and gas industry, rationalizing rioting in the summer of 2020, and comparing the Trump administration to the Ku Klux Klan.[13]

COVID-19 policy

On January 31, 2023, Vasquez voted to require health care workers to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.[14][15]

On February 1, 2023, Vasquez voted against a resolution to end the COVID-19 national emergency.[16][17]

Energy

Vasquez supported President Joe Biden‘s freeze on oil and gas leases.[18]

Syria

In 2023, Vasquez voted against H.Con.Res. 21, which would have ended U.S. troops’ involvement in the American-led intervention in the Syrian civil war within 180 days.[19][20]

2024 presidential nominee

On July 19, 2024, Vasquez called for Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 United States presidential election.[21]
